Apostille by country

Every country has two guides: documents issued there (how to get the apostille) and documents used there (what the recipient needs). 130 Convention parties, plus countries that require legalisation.

Apostille questions, answered

An apostille is a standardised certificate under the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961. It confirms that the signature, the capacity of the signatory and the seal on a public document are genuine, so that the document is accepted in the other Convention countries without consular legalisation. It does not certify the content of the document.

More than 130 contracting parties plus territories such as Hong Kong and Macao. Where an Article 12 objection is in force between two states – for example Germany and India – the apostille is not accepted between them and legalisation applies instead. Non-Convention countries such as the UAE, Qatar or Egypt always require legalisation. Use the checker above for a definitive answer per country pair and document.

Always the competent authority of the country that issued the document – a foreign ministry, a Secretary of State, a court, a prefecture or a notarial chamber, depending on the country. The notary reviews your application and decides the appropriate route for your document.

Two parts: the fees of the notary and the issuing authority, which we pass through 1:1, and Notaryzer’s service fee for the review, submission, tracking and shipping. You receive both as separate lines in a written quote and pay nothing before you accept. Express – twice as fast, with same-day dispatch – is optional.

From days, where a country issues e-apostilles or processes quickly, to a few weeks for postal applications and legalisations. Your status page shows the expected completion date after the review.

An apostille is attached to a document with an original signature or seal – never to a scan. After the review the notary tells you how the original is to be presented, or whether a certified copy is the right route for your recipient.

For birth, marriage, death, residence and similar civil-status documents, and for police certificates of the citizen’s own member state: no – EU Regulation 2016/1191 abolished it in 2019. Diplomas, notarial deeds and company documents are not covered and may still need an apostille.

An apostille is a single certificate valid in all Convention countries. Legalisation is the older chain ending at the destination’s embassy or consulate; it is required for non-Convention countries and for country pairs with an Article 12 objection.
