Tunisia has applied the Hague Apostille Convention since March 30, 2018. Public documents from other Convention countries – civil-status certificates, diplomas, police certificates, notarial deeds, court decisions and company documents – are accepted in Tunisia with an apostille from the issuing country, unless an Article 12 objection is in force between the two states. No embassy or consular step is required.
Because of Article 12 objections by Germany, Austria and Greece, the apostille is not accepted between Tunisia and those three states in either direction. Documents issued there for Tunisia are authenticated in the issuing country and then legalised by the Tunisian embassy or consulate; Tunisian documents for those states are legalised by, or verified through, their missions in Tunisia. With all other Convention parties a single apostille is enough.
Tunisian civil registries, courts, notaries and ministries work in Arabic, and French is widely used in administration. Foreign documents are usually expected with an Arabic translation, and some authorities also accept French – confirm with the receiving office before translating.
Typical cases are marriages involving a Tunisian national (birth certificates, certificates of no impediment), powers of attorney for property or inheritance matters in Tunisia, and diplomas or civil-status documents issued in Tunisia for study, work or family reunification abroad.
Notaryzer handles it end to end: the notary reviews your application, we organise the apostille or legalisation in the issuing country, arrange the translation and ship the result to you or directly to the recipient in Tunisia.
- Check first whether the other country is Germany, Austria or Greece – then plan for legalisation, not an apostille
- Ask the Tunisian recipient whether an Arabic or a French translation is required
- For marriages, confirm the Tunisian civil registry’s document list before ordering certificates
