Brazil has applied the Hague Apostille Convention since August 14, 2016. Public documents from other Convention countries – civil-status certificates, diplomas, police certificates, notarial deeds, court decisions and company documents – are accepted in Brazil with an apostille from the issuing country, unless an Article 12 objection is in force between the two states. No embassy or consular step is required.

In Brazil the National Council of Justice (CNJ) runs the apostille system, and apostilles are issued by authorised notary and registry offices (cartórios) through the electronic Apostil system. Birth and marriage certificates, court documents, diplomas and police certificates from Brazil can therefore be apostilled at a cartório and verified online.

Foreign documents are used in Brazil for residence and registration with the Federal Police, marriage and transcription of foreign civil-status records at a cartório, revalidation of degrees at Brazilian universities, company formation at the Junta Comercial and property or inheritance matters. Brazilian authorities usually require a Portuguese translation by a tradutor juramentado registered with a state Junta Comercial, so the apostille is normally obtained in the issuing country first and the translation done in Brazil.

Brazil has objected to Kosovo’s accession, so apostilles do not work between Brazil and Kosovo; documents between them still need legalisation.

Notaryzer handles it end to end: the notary reviews your application, we organise the apostille or legalisation in the issuing country, arrange the translation and ship the result to you or directly to the recipient in Brazil.

  • Apostille the original first, then have it translated by a tradutor juramentado registered in Brazil
  • Brazilian apostilles are electronic and can be verified online – keep the verification code with the document
  • For degree revalidation, check the university’s list of required documents before apostilling
