Working abroad
Employers and licensing bodies in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the US, Canada, Australia, Germany and the UK require apostilled degrees.
Foreign employers, universities, licensing boards and immigration authorities verify degrees through an apostille. We know which countries need a pre-certification first, which accept a notarised copy, and which authority issues the apostille.
Let us get this done for you
Degree certificates and transcripts are documents of the university, and behind it of the state. Abroad they are accepted only with an apostille from the issuing country – for a job in the Gulf, a Master’s programme in Canada, a skilled-worker visa in Australia or Germany, a professional licence in the United States.
Two details make degree apostilles different from civil-status documents. First, many countries require an intermediate step: the university, the ministry of education or an agency such as NAWA (Poland), HEC (Pakistan), CHED (Philippines), DUO (Netherlands) or the state HRD department (India) confirms the signature before the apostille authority acts. Second, some countries – the US, the UK, Canada – do not apostille the diploma directly but a notarised or solicitor-certified copy of it.
Notaryzer identifies the right chain for your university and country, obtains the pre-certification, submits the documents for the apostille and delivers them. If you cannot part with the original, a certified copy can usually be apostilled instead – we tell you when the recipient accepts that.
Also known as: Hochschulzeugnis / Diplom / Urkunde (DE) · diplôme universitaire (FR) · título universitario (ES) · laurea / diploma universitario (IT) · diploma universitário (PT) · diploma / transkript (TR) · dyplom ukończenia studiów (PL) · diploma (NL)
An apostille is always issued in the country that issued the document. The most frequent issuing countries for a university degree & transcript:
| Issued in | Issued by | Apostille by |
|---|---|---|
| Germany | University, Hochschule or school | State administrative apostille office, usually after pre-certification by the university or ministry (Vorbeglaubigung) |
| United States | University registrar (notarised copy or registrar’s signature) | Secretary of State of the state where the notary or registrar is commissionedMost states require a notarised copy of the diploma or a notarised registrar statement first. |
| United Kingdom | University / awarding body | FCDO after certification of the document or a copy by a UK solicitor or notaryFCDO does not apostille degree certificates directly – a solicitor certifies first. |
| France | Université / rectorat / ministry | Chambers of notaries (competent authority since 2025)Some recipients require a certified true copy (copie certifiée conforme) first. |
| Spain | University / Ministry of Education (títulos oficiales) | Ministerio de Justicia after recognition of the signature (reconocimiento de firma) by the Ministry of Education or the university |
| Italy | University / school | Prefettura, after the university confirms the signature where required |

The route depends on the country pair. Popular destinations for a university degree & transcript – change the issuing country in the checker below:
Apostille, EU exemption or embassy legalisation – the answer per destination.
Both are possible in most countries and mandatory in some: the US, the UK and Canada apostille a notarised copy or a notarised registrar statement, not the diploma itself. Apostilling the original is safest for licensing bodies; a copy keeps the original with you. We recommend the route for your recipient.
Apostille authorities keep signature specimens of the officials whose documents they certify. Universities have too many signatories, so many countries require the university or its ministry to confirm the signature first – Vorbeglaubigung in Germany, NAWA in Poland, HEC in Pakistan, CHED in the Philippines, HRD in India. We obtain this confirmation as part of the service.
Not directly. The apostille requires an original signature or a certified printout from the examination office. We request a certified version from the university on your behalf.
Credential evaluators usually verify directly with the university and do not require an apostille, but the employer or immigration authority behind the evaluation often does. Check what the final recipient wants; we can advise.
No. Germany has objected to those countries’ accessions, so their apostilles are not accepted; German authorities verify the degree through the German mission instead. The checker on this page shows every such pair.
