Netherlands is an EU member state and a Convention party. Between EU member states, civil-status documents – and police certificates of a citizen’s own member state – need no apostille (Regulation 2016/1191); the multilingual standard form replaces a translation. For documents from outside the EU, and for diplomas, notarial deeds, court and company documents, the apostille of the issuing country is required.
Dutch apostilles are issued by the district courts (rechtbanken). Commonly apostilled Dutch documents are extracts from the BRP population register and civil-status records, the Verklaring Omtrent het Gedrag (VOG), notarial deeds, diplomas and KVK extracts.
Between EU member states, Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 exempts civil-status and similar public documents from the apostille, and the multilingual standard form can replace a translation. Documents from outside the EU need the apostille of the issuing country. The IND and municipalities accept documents in Dutch, English, French or German; other languages need a translation by a beëdigd vertaler (sworn translator). Typical uses are highly-skilled-migrant and family-reunification permits with the IND, registration in the BRP, marriage, diploma evaluation, and company formation via a Dutch notary and the KVK. Notaryzer’s Amsterdam office coordinates cases for Dutch recipients.
The Netherlands has objected to the accession of Bangladesh and Pakistan; between the Netherlands and these states the apostille does not apply and documents need legalisation.
Notaryzer handles it end to end: the notary reviews your application, we organise the apostille or legalisation in the issuing country, arrange the translation and ship the result to you or directly to the recipient in Netherlands.
- Documents in English, French or German are often accepted by the IND without translation – check before ordering one
- Registering a foreign birth certificate in the BRP: bring it apostilled from the issuing country
- From Bangladesh or Pakistan? Plan consular legalisation instead of an apostille
