Colombia has applied the Hague Apostille Convention since January 30, 2001. Public documents from other Convention countries – civil-status certificates, diplomas, police certificates, notarial deeds, court decisions and company documents – are accepted in Colombia with an apostille from the issuing country, unless an Article 12 objection is in force between the two states. No embassy or consular step is required.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancillería) issues Colombian apostilles online as e-Apostilles, each verifiable on the Cancillería website. Some documents, such as university degrees, must first be registered or verified with the relevant authority before the Cancillería can apostille them. Common Colombian documents sent abroad are civil-registry certificates, degrees and transcripts, police records (antecedentes judiciales) and notarial documents – for instance for nurses and other professionals moving abroad.

Foreign documents are used in Colombia for visas and residence, marriage at a notaría, recognition of degrees (convalidación) with the Ministry of Education, and company formation at a Cámara de Comercio. Documents not in Spanish need an official translation by a traductor oficial recognised in Colombia.

Notaryzer handles it end to end: the notary reviews your application, we organise the apostille or legalisation in the issuing country, arrange the translation and ship the result to you or directly to the recipient in Colombia.

  • Colombian e-Apostilles are electronic – keep the verification details so the receiving authority can check them
  • For degrees, allow time for the prior registration or verification step before the apostille
  • Use a traductor oficial for translations submitted to Colombian authorities

Yes – Colombia is party to the Hague Apostille Convention (in force since January 30, 2001). Apostilles from other Convention countries are accepted unless an Article 12 objection is in force between the two states.

Recipients in Colombia generally expect Spanish. We work with sworn or certified translators for these languages and know when the translator’s signature must be apostilled as well.
