Spain is an EU member state and a Convention party. Between EU member states, civil-status documents – and police certificates of a citizen’s own member state – need no apostille (Regulation 2016/1191); the multilingual standard form replaces a translation. For documents from outside the EU, and for diplomas, notarial deeds, court and company documents, the apostille of the issuing country is required.
Spanish apostilles are issued by the Ministerio de Justicia (including an electronic e-Apostille), by the Tribunales Superiores de Justicia for judicial documents and by the notarial colleges for notarial documents. Common Spanish documents apostilled for use abroad are civil-registry certificates, the certificado de antecedentes penales, notarial deeds and university degrees.
Between EU member states, Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 exempts civil-status and similar public documents from the apostille, using the multilingual standard form where available; the exemption does not cover every document or holder, so police certificates of non-EU nationals are often still requested with an apostille. Documents from outside the EU need the apostille of the issuing country. Spanish authorities expect translations by a traductor jurado appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Typical uses are residence and visa procedures (NIE, work and digital-nomad visas), homologación of degrees, powers of attorney for property purchases, company formation and inheritance.
Spain has objected to Kosovo’s accession, so apostilles do not work between Spain and Kosovo.
Notaryzer handles it end to end: the notary reviews your application, we organise the apostille or legalisation in the issuing country, arrange the translation and ship the result to you or directly to the recipient in Spain.
- Property purchases: have a bilingual power of attorney notarised and apostilled, then translated by a traductor jurado if needed
- Diplomas for homologación: apostille plus a sworn Spanish translation
- Order police certificates shortly before applying – Spanish immigration offices check how recent they are

Yes – Spain is party to the Hague Apostille Convention (in force since September 25, 1978). Apostilles from other Convention countries are accepted unless an Article 12 objection is in force between the two states.
Recipients in Spain generally expect Spanish. We work with sworn or certified translators for these languages and know when the translator’s signature must be apostilled as well.
The Ministerio de Justicia (also as an electronic e-Apostille), the Tribunales Superiores de Justicia for judicial documents and the notarial colleges for notarial documents.
Police certificates from non-EU states generally need an apostille from the issuing country and a traductor jurado translation. Certificates from EU states may be exempt, depending on the holder and the document.
