United Kingdom has applied the Hague Apostille Convention since January 24, 1965. Public documents from other Convention countries – civil-status certificates, diplomas, police certificates, notarial deeds, court decisions and company documents – are accepted in United Kingdom with an apostille from the issuing country, unless an Article 12 objection is in force between the two states. No embassy or consular step is required.
UK apostilles for documents from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are issued by the Legalisation Office of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), which also issues e-Apostilles for electronically signed PDF documents that recipients can verify online. Many documents, especially copies and private documents, must first be certified by a UK solicitor or notary. Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man issue their own apostilles.
Because the UK has left the EU, Regulation 2016/1191, which exempts certain public documents from the apostille between EU states, no longer applies: documents travelling between the UK and EU countries need an apostille again. Within the UK, many recipients do not insist on an apostille but do require a certified English translation.
Common cases are GMC and NMC registration of internationally trained doctors and nurses, skilled-worker and family visas with UKVI (some routes ask for criminal record certificates from countries of previous residence), university admissions, property purchases and probate.
Notaryzer handles it end to end: the notary reviews your application, we organise the apostille or legalisation in the issuing country, arrange the translation and ship the result to you or directly to the recipient in United Kingdom.
- GMC/NMC: check whether the regulator wants the original, a notarised copy or a direct verification
- UKVI: a certified English translation is usually essential; the apostille depends on the visa route
- UK documents: have copies certified by a UK solicitor or notary before the FCDO apostille
