Algeria has applied the Hague Apostille Convention since July 9, 2026. Public documents from other Convention countries – civil-status certificates, diplomas, police certificates, notarial deeds, court decisions and company documents – are accepted in Algeria with an apostille from the issuing country, unless an Article 12 objection is in force between the two states. No embassy or consular step is required.

With Algeria’s accession, documents from most Convention states only need an apostille for use in Algeria, and Algerian documents only need an Algerian apostille abroad. Austria, Germany and Greece raised Article 12 objections: between Algeria and these three states the apostille is not accepted and consular legalisation or verification continues to apply.

Algerian authorities generally expect documents in Arabic, with translations by an official translator in Algeria; French is widely used alongside Arabic. Typical cases are marriages and the transcription of civil-status events of Algerians abroad, inheritance and property matters handled through powers of attorney, and diplomas and civil-status records for study, work and family visas.

Notaryzer handles it end to end: the notary reviews your application, we organise the apostille or legalisation in the issuing country, arrange the translation and ship the result to you or directly to the recipient in Algeria.

  • Check whether the other country objected – with Austria, Germany and Greece legalisation still applies
  • Plan an Arabic translation by an official translator for use in Algeria
  • Powers of attorney for Algerian property or inheritance: confirm the required wording with the recipient
