Türkiye has applied the Hague Apostille Convention since September 29, 1985. Public documents from other Convention countries – civil-status certificates, diplomas, police certificates, notarial deeds, court decisions and company documents – are accepted in Türkiye with an apostille from the issuing country, unless an Article 12 objection is in force between the two states. No embassy or consular step is required.
Turkish apostilles are issued by two kinds of authority: governorships (valilik) and district governorships (kaymakamlık) for administrative documents such as civil-registry extracts or school records, and the justice commissions of the courts of first instance for court and notarial documents. Documents from other Convention states with an apostille are accepted by Turkish registry offices, land registries (Tapu), courts, banks, YÖK and the migration authorities without any consular step.
For birth, marriage and death certificates there is often a shortcut: Türkiye is a party to the CIEC convention on multilingual extracts, so the international extract issued by another party state (for example Germany, France, Italy or the Netherlands) is accepted without apostille or translation. For everything else the apostille is required, and Turkish authorities generally want a Turkish translation certified by a Turkish notary or a Turkish consulate.
Typical cases are residence and work permits, marriages at a Turkish registry office, diploma recognition (denklik) by YÖK, and property purchases or sales through a power of attorney. The Tapu and Turkish banks frequently reject powers of attorney whose wording does not match Turkish practice, so a bilingual text drafted with Turkish requirements in mind avoids delays.
Notaryzer handles it end to end: the notary reviews your application, we organise the apostille or legalisation in the issuing country, arrange the translation and ship the result to you or directly to the recipient in Türkiye.
- Civil-status documents: check whether a CIEC multilingual extract is available from the issuing state
- Powers of attorney for Tapu or banks: use a bilingual text that follows Turkish wording
- Diplomas for YÖK: apostille on the original or a notarised copy, plus a certified Turkish translation
