Serbia has applied the Hague Apostille Convention since April 27, 1992. Public documents from other Convention countries – civil-status certificates, diplomas, police certificates, notarial deeds, court decisions and company documents – are accepted in Serbia with an apostille from the issuing country, unless an Article 12 objection is in force between the two states. No embassy or consular step is required.
In Serbia apostilles are issued by the courts – the basic court for the area where the document was issued. Serbia applies the CIEC convention on multilingual civil-status extracts, so birth, marriage and death extracts on the international form from another participating state are accepted by Serbian registries without apostille or translation, and Serbian registries issue such extracts for use abroad.
Other foreign documents – powers of attorney for property sales and inheritance, court decrees such as divorce judgments, diplomas for employment, company documents for registration with the Serbian Business Registers Agency – need an apostille and a Serbian translation by a court interpreter (sudski tumač). Serbian documents going abroad are typically needed for work visas, study, marriage and family reunification.
Serbia has objected to Kosovo’s accession, so the apostille does not apply between Serbia and Kosovo; documents between them follow other procedures.
Notaryzer handles it end to end: the notary reviews your application, we organise the apostille or legalisation in the issuing country, arrange the translation and ship the result to you or directly to the recipient in Serbia.
- Order civil-status documents as multilingual CIEC extracts where both states apply the convention
- Serbian translations should be made by a sudski tumač (court interpreter)
- Serbian apostilles come from the basic court responsible for the issuing authority
