An apostille can only be issued in the country where the document was issued. For a document from Austria that means Austria’s designated authority; no other country can apostille it. We coordinate the submission in Austria, the notary reviews your application first, and the document is returned with the apostille – by courier or, where Austria issues electronic apostilles, as a verified PDF.

Apostille in Austria: questions
Under Article 6 of the Convention Austria has designated: 1. The Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs with regard to all documents issued by:; a) the Federal President or the Office of the Federal President,; b) the President of the National Council, the President of the Federal Council or the Parliamentary Administrative Office,; c) the federal government,. The notary reviews your application and we route the document to the right office.
In all Contracting States except Algeria, Bangladesh, Burundi, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Senegal, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam: an Article 12 objection is in force between them, so documents for these states need consular legalisation instead. Non-Convention countries (for example the UAE, Qatar, Egypt) always need legalisation.
The authority’s fee listed with the HCCH: The fees at the regional courts (judicial and notarial documents): € 14,40. Fees at the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs: € 17,50. Fees at Austrian Embassies and Consulates General: € 40,00. E-Register: https://www.signatur.rtr.at/en/vd/Pruefung.html. Official fees are passed through 1:1 and shown separately from Notaryzer’s service fee in your written quote; nothing is charged before you accept.
The apostille itself is standardised and accepted without translation. The document is in German; most recipients abroad want a sworn or certified translation into their language, which we add in the same order.
The Convention has been in force for Austria since January 13, 1968.
