Italy is an EU member state and a Convention party. Between EU member states, civil-status documents – and police certificates of a citizen’s own member state – need no apostille (Regulation 2016/1191); the multilingual standard form replaces a translation. For documents from outside the EU, and for diplomas, notarial deeds, court and company documents, the apostille of the issuing country is required.

In Italy, apostilles on judicial and notarial documents are issued by the Procura della Repubblica at the competent tribunale, and on administrative documents by the Prefettura. Frequently apostilled Italian documents are civil-status extracts, certificates from the casellario giudiziale, notarial deeds and diplomas.

Between EU member states, Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 exempts civil-status and similar public documents from the apostille, and some bilateral agreements (for example between Italy and Germany) waive formalities further; Italy also applies the CIEC multilingual extracts. Documents from outside the EU need the apostille of the issuing country. Comuni, notaries and courts require Italian translations, usually sworn (asseverata) before an Italian court or certified by an Italian consulate abroad.

Typical uses are marriage (with a nulla osta or certificate of no impediment), citizenship by descent (iure sanguinis), permesso di soggiorno, recognition of degrees, company formation, and property purchases and successions.

Notaryzer handles it end to end: the notary reviews your application, we organise the apostille or legalisation in the issuing country, arrange the translation and ship the result to you or directly to the recipient in Italy.

  • Plan a sworn (asseverata) Italian translation for almost every foreign document
  • For marriage in Italy, obtain the nulla osta or certificate of no impediment early
  • Citizenship by descent: apostille and translate every record in the family line

    Apostille for Italy: questions

Yes – Italy is party to the Hague Apostille Convention (in force since February 11, 1978). Apostilles from other Convention countries are accepted unless an Article 12 objection is in force between the two states.

Recipients in Italy generally expect Italian. We work with sworn or certified translators for these languages and know when the translator’s signature must be apostilled as well.

The Procura della Repubblica for judicial and notarial documents and the Prefettura for administrative documents.

Documents from non-EU Convention states generally need an apostille from the issuing country and a sworn Italian translation. Civil-status documents from EU member states are usually exempt under EU rules.
