Nigeria is not a contracting party to the Hague Apostille Convention. Documents for Nigeria therefore go through consular legalisation: the competent authority and the foreign ministry of the issuing country certify the document, and the Nigeria embassy or consulate legalises it.

Because the apostille route is not available, a document for Nigeria – for example a power of attorney, a company’s register extract for a Nigerian subsidiary or a civil-status document – is first certified by the competent authorities of the issuing country and then legalised by the Nigerian embassy or high commission responsible for that country. The Nigerian recipient decides whether it accepts the document.

Nigerian documents going abroad – birth certificates from the National Population Commission, degrees, affidavits, company documents – are typically authenticated in Nigeria and then legalised by the destination country’s mission, or verified by it. Some countries do not legalise Nigerian documents at all but check them through their missions: Germany, for example, verifies them through its missions in Abuja and Lagos, which can take several months. Nigerian founders registering a company abroad, students and skilled workers should allow for this.

Nigeria’s official language is English, so Nigerian documents are generally usable in English-speaking countries without translation; elsewhere a sworn translation into the local language is usually required.

Notaryzer handles it end to end: the notary reviews your application, we organise the apostille or legalisation in the issuing country, arrange the translation and ship the result to you or directly to the recipient in Nigeria.

  • Do not order an apostille for Nigeria – legalisation by the Nigerian mission is required
  • Ask the destination country whether it legalises Nigerian documents or verifies them
  • Start early: verification of Nigerian documents can take months
