Vietnam has applied the Hague Apostille Convention since September 11, 2026. Public documents from other Convention countries – civil-status certificates, diplomas, police certificates, notarial deeds, court decisions and company documents – are accepted in Vietnam with an apostille from the issuing country, unless an Article 12 objection is in force between the two states. No embassy or consular step is required.
With Vietnam’s accession, documents from most Convention states only need an apostille for use in Vietnam, and Vietnamese documents only need a Vietnamese apostille abroad. Austria, the Czech Republic and Germany raised Article 12 objections: between Vietnam and these three states the apostille is not accepted, and consular legalisation or verification by the destination country’s mission continues to apply.
Vietnamese authorities generally require a Vietnamese translation, certified in Vietnam or by a Vietnamese mission abroad. Typical cases are work permits for foreign employees (degree and criminal record certificate), investment and enterprise registration for foreign-owned companies, marriage registration with a foreign spouse, and, in the other direction, birth, marriage and school documents of Vietnamese workers, trainees and students abroad.
Notaryzer handles it end to end: the notary reviews your application, we organise the apostille or legalisation in the issuing country, arrange the translation and ship the result to you or directly to the recipient in Vietnam.
- Check whether the other country objected – with Austria, the Czech Republic and Germany legalisation still applies
- Work permits: prepare the degree and a recent criminal record certificate with apostille and translation
- Have the Vietnamese translation certified in a form the Vietnamese authority accepts
