Who issues it, who apostilles it

Issued by

Standesamt (registry office) of the place of the event

Apostille by

State administrative apostille office (Berlin: LABO; elsewhere Regierungspräsidium, Bezirksregierung or ministry)

Multilingual CIEC extracts (Formule A/B/C) are accepted without apostille in CIEC states; inside the EU no apostille at all (Reg. 2016/1191).

Where a Germany death certificate with apostille is accepted

Not accepted in Algeria, Bangladesh, Burundi, Dominican Republic, India, Kosovo, Liberia, Mongolia, Morocco, Pakistan, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam (Article 12 objection) – documents for these countries are legalised or verified instead.

What we need from you

  • Recent original death certificate (we can order it with proof of your entitlement)
  • Country of issue, destination and purpose
  • Optional: inheritance documents for a joint apostille request

Sworn translation into the language of the probate court is almost always required outside the EU.

Germany death certificate apostille: questions

Yes. The apostille must be issued in Germany, but you do not have to be there: we organise a suitable original where possible, the submission to the competent authority and delivery of the apostilled death certificate anywhere. The notary reviews your application first.

An Article 12 objection is in force between Germany and Algeria, Bangladesh, Burundi, Dominican Republic, India, Kosovo, Liberia, Mongolia, Morocco, Pakistan, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam; documents for these countries are legalised or verified instead. Non-Convention countries such as the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait always need legalisation.

The HCCH record lists: Fees are set on the basis of the value of the certificate. The costs incurred by the applicant are between a minimum of €10 and a maximum of  €130. On average the fees amount to between between 12 Euros and 40 Euros.. Official fees are passed through 1:1 and shown separately in your quote.

In most countries only relatives in the direct line, spouses and persons with a legal interest can obtain it. With your authorisation and proof of kinship we order it from the registry and take it straight to the apostille authority.

Usually yes when it is used abroad. It is a court or notarial document, so it is apostilled by the authority responsible for judicial documents in the issuing country. We submit both documents in parallel to save time.

Where the registry issues certificates online and the country has e-apostilles, within days. Elsewhere the bottleneck is obtaining a fresh certificate, which we start on the day you order.
